Articles We Have Liked.....
BlessingWhite's recent "State of the Career
Report" suggests that for most workers today,
stimulating and valuable work is more important
than salary and advancement. At the same time,
employees are rejecting traditional career
advancement models experienced by older
generations.
Beverly Mehlhoff, director of learning and
development at Guidant Corporation, says both
employers and workers today are seeking training
for help in "realizing someone's potential."
Ideally, workers will have a degree of control
over their career development, and the role of the
employer is to provide tools to help workers
define how they want to approach work.
Employers also must provide coaching and skills
training programs. Mehlhoff says rotational
projects are a useful way to "grow future leaders,
break down silos, and share learning" while making
sure the "assignment fits the individual's
aspirations and career growth as well as the
organization's goals."
Another important aspect of employee career
development is managers, says Mehlhoff, stressing
that managers must be familiar with workers'
skills and support their plans via a "positive
push-pull" approach. This requires that the
manager be a successful coach prior to offering
resources to workers.
